The Background

What’s it like to actually have your own little corner of the internet?

I’ve been building websites for a little under a year now, and have made a few for myself in order to learn and practice. So far I’ve been sending them out into the world on URLs created and maintained by hosting services (blah blah blah dot-herokuapp etc).

I finally plucked up the courage to make a financial commitment to some of my practice projects. It’s not a huge amount — $20 for two domains for two years — but when you’re an out-of-work developer trying to lands their first job, there’s still a psychological barrier to dishing out any cash that you don’t think you’re gonna earn back.

But sometimes you just gotta say “fuck it”. So, “fuck it”, I thought. “Let’s buy englishculturedictionary.com.”
